Funding for Innovative Cancer Research: Support for Small Businesses from the NCI SBIR & STTR Program

Monday, April 20, 2009
12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Room 607

Speakers: Michael Weingarten, Director, NCI SBIR Development Center; joined by one to two companies that have successfully utilized SBIR to move their technologies towards commercialization.

Financial support for developing and commercializing novel cancer therapies and technologies is necessary and often scarce for emerging companies, particularly in today’s economic climate.

In this informational session, experts from the National Cancer Institute’s Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs will discuss how small businesses can lead their innovations to the next level with funding from one of the largest sources of early-stage technology financing in the United States.

If you are an entrepreneur, small business, or academic researcher interested in tapping into new sources of funding for technology development and commercialization, you are invited to learn keen insights about new funding opportunities from the NCI SBIR & STTR Programs. The SBIR panel will offer practical advice on strategies for developing successful applications, helpful tips on the application process, and how SBIR helps to foster partnerships and collaborations between academic researchers and the business community.

The panel will also review successful SBIR & STTR-funded companies and how they strategically incorporated SBIR funding to take their technology to the commercialization stage.

In addition a new opportunity, the SBIR Phase II Bridge Award, which provides increased funding to advance a promising therapeutic or device toward commercialization, will be highlighted for previously-funded NIH-wide SBIR Phase II projects.
