2012 Events

SBIR Session at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) 103rd Annual Meeting

NCI SBIR Program Directors Dr. Andrew Kurtz and Dr. Greg Evans presented at the AACR 103rd Annual Meeting, and provided information about SBIR & STTR funding opportunities and other NCI initiatives that are helping small businesses and research institutions commercialize new cancer innovations. Dr. Kurtz and Dr. Evans discussed: SBIR & STTR program details and eligibility requirements, NCI's research priorities for small businesses, tips on how to submit a successful application, and special NCI initiatives to foster external partnerships and investments, including the Phase II Bridge Award and the NCI SBIR Investor Forum.

Additionally during the session, Dr. Jim Olson of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center discussed lessons learned from his own experiences in working with the SBIR & STTR Program. Participants had the opportunity to learn how this team leveraged STTR funding to successfully translate a novel technology from an academic cancer center into a small business and promising commercial opportunity. NCI SBIR Development Center Director Michael Weingarten presented along with NCI SBIR Program Director David Beylin at an information/overview session of the NCI SBIR & STTR Programs, intended to provide best practices to help advance innovative cancer technologies. Attendees learned about new programs that NCI has launched, including $8 million in new contract funding opportunities, to support SBIR companies in moving their technologies towards the marketplace. Additionally, participants received valuable tips on how to develop strong applications for SBIR and about other programs that NCI offers, including its initiative for helping awardees bridge the "Valley of Death."

NCI SBIR Program Manager, Todd Haim, PhD presented along with Randy Harmon, a New Jersey Small Business Development Center (NJSBDC) Technology Commercialization Consultant, at a seminar hosted by the NJIT Enterprise Development Center in Newark, NJ. The seminar provided participants with an introduction to and overview of the NIH and NCI SBIR & STTR Programs including current contract funding opportunities, program structure, and new initiatives. Additionally, both speakers provided guidance on finding relevant funding opportunities and writing competitive proposals.

Executive Speaker Series: New Funding Opportunities at NCI/NIH

NCI SBIR Development Center Program Director Patricia Weber, DrPH, spoke as part of Carnegie Mellon University's "Healthcare, Environment and Smart Living Executive Speaker Series." The Executive Speaker Series convened thought leaders to discuss innovative technologies, service systems, and opportunities that have the potential to advance healthcare, the environment, energy and green living.

During this event, Dr. Weber provided an overview of the NCI SBIR & STTR programs, information on how small businesses and research institutions can leverage SBIR & STTR funding to advance their cancer research, and practical advice and strategies for developing successful funding proposals. In addition, the presentation highlighted the SBIR Phase II Bridge Award, new NCI contract topics, as well as a new funding opportunity being developed for companies with technologies in the health communication, eHealth and mHealth areas.


NCI SBIR Funding Workshop – Philadelphia, PA

NCI SBIR Development Center Team Leader Greg Evans, Ph.D., along with Richard Thompson of the Innovation Partnership (IPART) and Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Southeastern Pennsylvania, held an NCI SBIR Funding Workshop about funding opportunities, how to tap into state and local resources, best practices, and how to develop fundable SBIR/STTR research proposals.

Richard Thompson provided an overview of the funding landscape and discussed the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's IPART program and how it can help therapeutic, diagnostic and device researchers and companies with SBIR/STTR applications. Dr. Evans discussed new NCI SBIR contract topics with a November deadline, as well as the National Cancer Institute's (NCI) year-round funding opportunities and ancillary support programs for small companies. After the presentations, attendees had the opportunity to meet with the presenters.


NCI Funding Opportunities Forum

On September 23rd, the Massachusetts Technology Transfer Center and MassBio hosted a forum to learn about funding opportunities being offered by the National Cancer Institute.

David Beylin and Todd Haim from NCI's SBIR program outlined contract funding opportunities in the cancer research and development space as well as provided guidance on preparing competitive SBIR applications. The event was geared to companies that are focused on imaging, device, health IT, therapeutics and cancer biology. After the overview session, attendees had the opportunity to meet with the presenters.

Patricia Weber, DrPH, Program Director with the National Cancer Institute's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Development Center provided a live overview of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)/NCI funding opportunities. Information about funding opportunities available to small businesses to support the research, development, and commercialization of novel cancer-related technologies was provided. Also, practical advice and tips for developing successful SBIR funding proposals was discussed. Following the presentation, Dr. Weber held 15-minute one-on-one sessions with interested participants.

NCI's Office of Cancer Centers hosted a free webinar on Thursday, September 8, from 2:00 to 3:30 pm, ET, which discussed ways to tap into the resources of the National Cancer Institute's Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Programs, two of the largest sources of early-stage technology financing in the United States.

During this webinar, NCI SBIR Development Center Director Michael Weingarten and Program Director David Beylin provided an overview of the NCI SBIR & STTR Programs, and discussed new and existing initiatives to help small businesses further commercialize their innovations, including funding opportunities such as the recently announced $8M in contract funding opportunities, and the Phase II Bridge Award. Additionally, SBIR grantee James Olson, member of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and President & Founder of Presage Biosciences, shared how he strategically leveraged the SBIR Program to help raise investor funding and advance his company's cancer technology to the next stage of development.


ACS Webinar: SBIR Funding Opportunities with NCI/NIH – Priority Areas for 2012

2011 BIO International Convention

NCI SBIR leadership presented on two occasions at the 2011 BIO International Convention, a global event that attracts the biggest names in biotech, offers key networking and partnering opportunities, and provides insights and inspiration on the major trends affecting the industry.

NCI SBIR Program Director, Greg Evans, Ph.D., presented a session entitled, "Introduction to the NCI SBIR Program," which highlighted the unique opportunities available for small businesses through the SBIR Program, as well as provided a brief Program overview, discussed company eligibility, and offered tips for applying. NCI SBIR leadership was also available following the presentation for a small, focused Q&A session.

NCI SBIR Program Director, Deepa Narayanan, MS, CCDM, met one-on-one during a Meet the Experts session to answer a wide range of questions from small business professionals. Topics included eligibility, funding opportunities, program structure, application guidance, and program initiatives.


13th Annual NIH SBIR & STTR 2011 Conference

NCI SBIR leadership attended the 13th Annual NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Conference. This year's theme was Translating Medical Discoveries into Health Products. Over 600 health and science managers, entrepreneurs, small business researchers, university researchers, and consulting organizations convened on the NIH campus to explore the many nuances of the NIH SBIR/STTR Programs, learned about the funding opportunities available to small business researchers, and had their questions answered by NIH staff in order to understand how the NIH SBIR/STTR program can be a valuable resource to help start and/or grow companies.

NCI SBIR Development Center Program Director, Todd Haim, PhD was featured as a panelist during a "Look into NIH" session, which was an opportunity to learn about the high priority research areas available for small businesses, as well as to gain insights into the various resources available from the NCI SBIR & STTR Programs. SBIR staff was also available throughout the event for one-on-one discussions to answer specific questions regarding SBIR & STTR funding opportunities.


American Association for Cancer Research 102nd Annual Meeting

NCI SBIR hosted a session on Monday, April 4 from 12:00pm – 1:30pm entitled "Bringing Innovative Science to the Market: NCI SBIR Initiatives to Advance the Commercialization of New Cancer Technologies." In the session, NCI SBIR Development Center leaders discussed new and existing initiatives to help small businesses further commercialize their innovations, including funding opportunities such as the SBIR Phase I, Phase II, and Phase II Bridge Award, and the recently launched pilot Regulatory Assistance Program. Additionally, a current SBIR grantee shared how he strategically leveraged the SBIR Program to help raise additional investor funding and advance his company's cancer technology to the next stage of development. NCI SBIR & STTR and NIH TRND Information Session at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

* Michael Weingarten, Director of the NCI SBIR Development Center, delivered a presentation to help small businesses and research institutions learn more about upcoming NCI SBIR & STTR funding opportunities, the Phase II Bridge Award, and tips for applying. During this open meeting, John McKew, Ph.D., Branch Chief, NIH Therapeutics for Rare & Neglected Diseases, also delivered a program overview which detailed their efforts to bridge the existing gap between basic research discovery and the movement of drugs into pre-clinical stages. Both presentations were followed by one-on-one breakout discussions to answer specific questions regarding the SBIR & STTR funding opportunities, as well as drug development collaborations available from the TRND Program.

* NCI SBIR Development Center Program Director Andrew Kurtz, Ph. D. spoke at the Personalized Medicine World Conference (PMWC), a fully integrated conference on personalized medicine which brings together all aspects of business, government, healthcare-delivery, research and technology – all in one information-rich two-day conference. The PMWC 2011 program featured over 40 speakers, an exhibition floor, personalized medicine tutorials and emerging company presentations. NCI SBIR delivered a presentation in the emerging company track. Dr. Kurtz provided details on the NCI SBIR & STTR Program and funding opportunities, as well as participated in one-on-one discussions to answer specific questions following the presentation.
